With star of stage and cinema, Gemma Arterton, in the title role, The Duchess of Malfi is set to kick off the 2015 Globe on Screen season in style. In the Italian court of the early 1500s, the beautiful, recently widowed Duchess has fallen in love with a man named Antonio. The only problem is, her scheming brothers – Ferdinand and the Cardinal, believe Antonio to be totally inferior to the Duchess in terms of status, and with their inheritance at stake, they decide to ban her from marrying him. Bereft, the Duchess flies in the face of their anger and marries her beloved in secret. It is only after the birth of their third child that the truth is discovered, and the Duchess must face the wrath of her brothers. Both love and life are threatened as Ferdinand and the Cardinal prove unforgiving in their disapproval, and the consequences of the Duchess’ actions are brutal and merciless.
